Selected with artist, writer, and film curator Carolyn Lazard, CEAM artist-in-residence and curator Staci Bu Shea will host a screening of Nicolas Philibert’s “Every Little Thing” (1997) followed by a discussion with Lazard via Skype.
Founded by Jean Oury in 1951, La Borde psychiatric clinic in Loire Valley, France has been a model in the field of institutional psychotherapy where residents participate in running the facility. The clinic’s anti-psychiatry practices were developed with Felix Guattari, whose theory and practice of schizoanalysis, set in La Borde, was included in his collaboration with philosopher Gilles Deleuze, Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (1972). The film Every Little Thing follows residents and staff staging their production of “Operette” by Witold Gombrowicz, which inaugurates the annual summer tradition where those at La Borde get together to perform a play. The film documents the everyday life of residents and staff at the clinic, including complex moments concerning documentation, consent, and care.
Carolyn Lazard is a writer, film curator, and artist working in media and performance. Her work engages collective practice to address the ethics of wellness, dependency, and labor. Carolyn has presented work in various spaces including Light Industry, the Poetry Project, Recess, Anthology Film Archives, the Arnolfini, and the New Museum, and has published writing in the Brooklyn Rail and Mousse magazine. She is a founding member of the art collective Canaries (women and femme artists living with chronic illness) and the Harriet Tubman Collective (Black disabled and d/Deaf advocates and organizers). Carolyn holds a B.A. from Bard college and she lives in Philadelphia.
Staci has organized a film program as part of her Spring residency at CEAM titled “The shape of my kin networks looks more like a trellis or an esplanade than a tree.” The program is titled after a line from Donna Haraway’s “The Companion Species Manifesto,” a book that Staci is continuously rereading throughout the residency, to emphasize the weaving of relationships, practices, and objects as an organizing form and methodology. The program features three screenings with special invited guests to talk about each film: “Every Little Thing” (1997) by Nicolas Philibert with Carolyn Lazard on February 22, “Nightcleaners” (1975) by Berwick Street Collective with Rachael Rakes on March 8, and “The Joycean Society” (2013) by Dora Garcia with Dr. Craig Woelfel on April 5.
