  • Dan Askew
    Dan Askew
    Visual Arts; Visual Arts: Sculpture
With a love for pure function and the patina that comes from prolonged use, Dan's works hint at vague mythologies surrounding the vast plethora of apocalyptic scenarios, both imagined and “legitimately” prophesied. Black humor, along with a chaotic mash-up of media process becomes the lens through which to view a confused reality. The range of influences is evidence of a pre-adolescent skeptic with more questions than answers. Insect morphology, ancient and tribal art, hydrodynamic and aerodynamic forms, mechanical engineering, the history of space exploration, fractal geometry, robotics, SETI, comic books, popular science fiction, and toys, create a catalog of images to anxiously explore a potential future past. Dan Askew has a BFA from the University of Southern Mississippi, and an MFA from the University of North Texas. Since 2011, he has been a professor of studio art at the Florida School of the Arts in Palatka.

Bruce Kevin Bates grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida, and currently resides in St. Augustine, Florida. Since early childhood Bruce has had a passion for drawing and painting, and has always enjoyed sketching and painting the people and places around him. While his artwork usually depicts realistic images, he often uses heightened colors, textures, and swirling brush strokes in his works to communicate his thoughts and feelings about the universal energy he feels surrounds us, and connects us all together. His favorite medium is oil, but he continues to experiment with new materials and techniques. He often employs “Old Master” techniques in his works, combined with new methods that he has developed over the years through experimentation. Bruce holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Honors from Pratt Institute in New York, and has exhibited his work throughout the state of Florida.

Crafts: Glass; Crafts: Jewelry; Visual Arts: Printmaking; Visual Arts: Sculpture
Nature-bound. Born in land-locked Pennsylvania but drawn to the coast. Initially having moved to St. Augustine, Florida to attend Flagler College in 2007; after graduating my enthusiasm for the local environment and inspiration drawn from it, has only grown. I began in the print industry directly after college, as the demand for philosophers during a recession is quite often lower than one would expect (a little humor). While learning the economics & technical skills of producing in the print industry; I had the opportunity of attending First Coast Technical College on full scholarship and graduated top 3 in my class in Aerospace Fabrication. Since graduation, I've been selling commission-based glass sculptures and delegate my print-career to problem solving specialty substrates while working hand-in-hand with local & passionate business owners. If you need a solutions architect that enjoys actively engaging in a learning environment in hopes of achieving the best final result, chances are that we may work well together. Feel free to browse my online Portfolio at www.weston-mcbride.com {Best experience when viewed via desktop} Specialties in Glass: Sculptural Borosilicate torch|bench-working, kiln-work: Fusing, Slumping, Casting, Etc (COE 96), Coldworking: Sandblasting, Glass etching & engraving. Laura Mongiovi is an Associate Professor of Art and Design at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. She has an MFA from University of Colorado, Boulder and a BFA from Florida State University. Mongiovi's work is a response to cultural artifacts, rituals and beliefs. She investigates the processes, materials and concepts used to create objects, textiles and architecture. Within these diverse approaches to cultivating traditional practices exists a mutual human need to satisfy personal desire. Rare objects, garments laden with color and texture, palaces with lavish gardens and tantalizing sensations of the palate have influenced paradigms of commerce, culture and science. Historical details reveal the common need we have to please the senses. Mongiovi's work pays homage to origins while alluding to personal experience. Mongiovi exhibits her work nationally including solo exhibitions, juried and group shows. She teaches across the curriculum at Flagler College and presents her teaching pedagogy at national conferences. Mongiovi guest lectures about her work and leads workshops.

  • Joe Segal
    Joe Segal
    Visual Arts: Sculpture
Joe's work examines man’s relationship with nature. Where typically raw materials are processed to eliminate their variations into a useable state, this manipulation for the sake of utility reflects an insensitivity to the natural world. Joe honors the essence of the materials which is not only visible but central to the final appearance of his work. His sculptures are also observations of time passing. Time is linear and cyclical. The past is somewhere behind us while the future is farther ahead. And the sun rises and sets every day. The seasons change every year. These ideas are illustrated within organic sculptures that are divided by rectilinear elements. Joe Segal creates meditative compositions to contemplate our connection to nature and the most perplexing of human concerns: the passage of time.

  • Herrick Smith
    Herrick Smith
Crafts; Crafts: Ceramics; Visual Arts; Visual Arts: Photography; Visual Arts: Sculpture; Potter
Biography Standing on a foundation of pot sherds left by the Timucua potters of centuries past, Herrick Smith was born and raised in Saint Augustine, Florida, and from a young age has appreciated the beauty found in nature. As a boy, he would often go adventuring in the coastal woods and subsequently developed a deep love for the natural processes found there. It is fitting that his first introduction to clay was the making of his boy-hood pinch pots from the same clay beds used by the Timucua so long ago. In high school and through the end of college he worked as a blacksmith at the Colonial Quarter, a museum about colonial Spanish Florida and earned his BA in Economics from the University of North Florida in 2013 with a minor in Environmental Science. While at college, searching for a creative outlet he took his first ceramics elective and continued to take elective courses and conduct independent research in ceramics during his time there. Several months after graduation he moved to Gardner Kansas and spent 8 months as an apprentice at Spinning Earth Pottery with Danny Meisinger. During this apprenticeship Smith rapidly gained skill at the potter’s wheel with respect to functional pottery as well as the use of the wheel as a tool to create larger scale works of art. Nearing the end of his apprenticeship Smith was accepted to Graduate School and in the fall of 2014 he began graduate school at Fort Hays State University (FHSU). Seeking to establish a personal style, Smith began developing a thrown and altered cup form which opens itself to a variety of atmospheric effects. With a series of three of these at the 2015 NCECA Conference he won the Skutt Student Throwing Competition judged by Steven Hill and received the grand prize of the Steven Hill edition Skutt Potter’s Wheel. Smith exhibits nationally and internationally and is currently working with wheel thrown elements and sculptural forms in pursuit of an MFA in Ceramics at (FHSU) with the goal of becoming a professor of ceramics while remaining active in the gallery circuit. Artist Statement The natural beauty of the estuarine and hammock environment of the North East Florida coast deeply impacts my forms and the patterns and textures applied to them. Especially beautiful are the delicate processes involved in the lives of small plants, mosses, and fungi and the many shapes allowing for the flourishing of these hardy little flora. The gentle and earthy color palette of the swamp merging with the forest floor is at once rich and full of life as well as calming and peaceful. Capturing the intrinsic beauty of color and form found in the sandy hammock environments just upland of the salty estuaries, the ceramic forms are organic and allow for a diversity of surface treatments. Utilizing a variety of glazes including some with natural ash components the work synthesizes highly technical firing methods and the aesthetics of atmospheric firing resulting in surfaces that bless the piece with anonymity of process and eternal variation. Recognizing the ever-present hardships in life the work allows the viewer to experience the embrace of nature and find refuge from the constant bombardment so often present in our contemporary culture. As creators of culture we as artists are called to create a good culture. I do this through the creation of objects that lack the facade of constructed meaning and exist to bring beauty, lacking pretention, into the lives of others. Training as a blacksmith also impacts the work through the methods involved and the rhythms of the fire as well as attention to detail and finishing processes. The beauty and power of time in concert with nature, displayed in subtle details translates nature into culture and affords the viewer a glimpse of the rare beauty seen by a walker on the paths lacing my native coast.
