  • Sam Pacetti
    Sam Pacetti
Music; Music: Composition; Music: Instrumental; Music: Other; Music: Vocal
Sam Pacetti is one who brings it all together. A fingerstyle guitar wizard. A deft songwriter, capable of haunting depth and wry humor in the space of one song. An impassioned and ecstatic vocalist, as well as a mesmerizing live performer, seamlessly melding head-spinning guitar pyrotechnics and raw emotion into one breathtaking package. Pacetti represents a culmination of the best of the American and British traditions. His 1997 Waterbug debut, "Solitary Travel," garnered critical raves. "This guy is very good, indeed," deadpanned the highly respected (and highly critical) UK magazine Folk Roots. And Dirty Linen, the influential US roots publication, opined, "Although the woods are full of young guitar virtuosos, few have developed the style, technique, and artistic wisdom of Sam Pacetti. 'Solitary Travel' heralds the arrival of one of the most talented instrumentalists and composers to appear in acoustic music in a month of Sundays." Sam Pacetti grew up in North Florida, hardly known as a hotbed of either the folk tradition of musical innovation. At 13, he found the music of both Chet Atkins and Merle Travis profound influences on his early musical development. Then fate intervened shortly after in the person of Gamble Rogers, the legendary picker and raconteur from St Augustine who took the young Pacetti under his wing. It was a time of astonishing musical and emotional growth. Pacetti and Rogers met and played weekly for a year until Rogers died while trying to save a drowning tourist caught in an undertow at Flagler Beach Florida. Though brief in their time together, Rogers was able to instill in Pacetti the importance of the folk process, the passing of music and oral tradition from teacher to student. Pacetti still counts Rogers as his most influential mentor. Tradition and innovation neatly balance in Sam Pacetti's music, the whole infused by a relentless intelligence intent on musical and philosophical synthesis. Martin Simpson, Richard Thompson, Joni Mitchell, and Merle Travis are touchstones to Pacetti, and while there are strong elements of the American Primitive school of guitar throughout his work, there is a powerful emotionality as well - an earthy sensuality more reminiscent of a Greg Brown or a red-dirt blues master than of a musical academician. Word has spread about Sam Pacetti and as with anything truly innovative, it starts at the grassroots. You won't see Pacetti written up in People or Us. You won't hear his music on Top-40 radio. No, the word is spreading about Sam Pacetti the way true innovation always does - through non-commercial radio play. From tapes and CDs passed from friend to friend, at folk festivals and listening rooms. And, in the tradition stemming from the days of rent-raising parties in the Mississippi delta - and now carried on by music aficionados unable to find music that interests them within the mainstream.

I believe that you never stop learning. Everywhere I look I find something new and interesting to explore and reflect upon! Growing up on the coast of New England, I am drawn to the simple beauty found in daily life on and around the coast. My goal is to share with you a sentimental connection to this world by bringing to mind a familiar feeling or memory. I hope to do this not only through my subject matter but through my color composition as well. I’m drawn to the pastel medium because of the luminous quality of the pure pigment and color choices. I love its immediacy and the purity of its color. At the age of 10, I began taking art lessons at the “YMCA” from a Mass College of Art professor. My subject matter was life as I knew it; mainly my family. I’d draw my sisters in curlers watching TV (much to their chagrin) using any type of material that I could get my hands on! Later, I studied at the Art Institute of Boston, Mass College of Art and the Museum of Fine Art School. Less formally, I’ve participated in numerous workshops offered by Frank Federico, Susan Ogilvie, Ellen Rolli and Susan Guest-McPhail, to name a few. I am a member of AGOSA, The First Coast Pastel Society and the St. Augustine Art Association. An award winning artist; my paintings and portrait commissions can be found in many private collections.

Bob Patterson is an award-winning songwriter, singer, storyteller, author, visual artist, and public speaker. He's been performing all over the country at festivals, clubs, radio, and television for more than fifty years. He was awarded the Fellow Man and Mother Earth Award from the Stetson Kennedy Foundation and has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Storytelling Association. While capable of performing a wide variety of music, he prefers performances where he can perform his original Florida Stories and Songs. He's an advocate for protecting the wild heart of Florida, especially clean water. His career began in the late 1960s when he signed a recording contract with the prestigious folk music label, Vanguard Records. He recorded an album at that time with his folk-rock band, Elizabeth. Bob wrote and sang the popular single "Mary Ann," along with four other cuts on the album. Bob moved to Florida in 1969 and became an integral part of the Florida folk music scene. He has been featured at the Florida Folk Festival for over forty years performing 12 string guitar and songwriting workshops, storytelling, and music concerts. He opened for Emmy Lou Harris at the 2005 event and was chosen as one of the Legacy Performers for 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 festivals. He independently produces music and stories on CD which have received rave reviews from critics and fans alike. His songs have been recognized by the American Song Festival and The Best of Florida Song Writing Competition. His song "Lullabye of the Rivers" was used in the documentary film about the Ocklawaha River. He had his book "Forgotten Tales of Florida" published by the History Press. Bob is the co-founder of the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival and has served as the event's artistic director for over fifteen years. He is a board member of the Florida Storytelling Association and has been producing music for the HAWKE Wildlife Association’s "Music for the Birds Concert" for over twenty years. The editor of First Coast Entertainer, Rick Grant, writes that “Bob valiantly carries on the Gamble Rogers tradition of humorous storytelling, folk-singing, and consummate guitar artistry. He is a true Florida songwriter and superb picker of the 12 string." Dr. Margaret Longhill, president of the Will McLean Foundation writes, “His songs, like his photographs, vignettes of the heart, stir us to look a little deeper and love a little more." With a distinctive voice and 12 string guitar technique, Bob will take you on a trip through the real Florida that is filled with humor and folklore of the people."
  • The Pauses
    The Pauses
    Music
The Pauses’ (who prefer that their possessive noun-ing be spelled Pauseses) overall sound is one anchored in complexion and combination, a world where guitars are BFFs with synthesizers, horns, bells, and ukuleles. Tierney Tough’s bright, fresh voice glides just as easily atop the breathy sparkle and agile math of “Go North” as it does the indie-pop sway and post-hardcore torque of “Beyond Bianca.” From the serious, atmospheric mood of “The Migration” and “Pull the Pin” to the lithe, glitchy charm of “Hands Up”. The Pauses got mad range, often in the same song. Rooted in the dynamics and ethos of ’90s indie rock, their sound is a balancing act between rock and electronics, airiness and heft, suppleness and angularity. And their debut album, “A Cautionary Tale” (produced by J. Robbins of Jawbox and Burning Airlines) shows that you can explore without losing your core. Since the album’s release, The Pauses have released a split 12?, contributed a track to a Jason Noble Benefit Compilation, played multiple festival showcases, invented Interact-O-Vision (a live interactive media show component), had songs featured in Harmonix’s Rock Band and multiple films (see: McSweeney’s “The Love Competition” http://vimeo.com/33698394), and have literally shared the stage (with members filling in as backup musicians) with Matt Pond, Davey Von Bohlen, Jonah Matranga, War on Women, and John Vanderslice.

  • Sara Pedigo
    Sara Pedigo
    Visual Arts; Visual Arts: Painting
Sara Pedigo grew up in the American South. She received her MFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 2007. She is currently a Professor at Flagler College located in Saint Augustine, Florida, her undergraduate alma mater. Pedigo has exhibited nationally, with solo exhibitions at Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, Western Illinois University, Furman University, College of Southern Nevada, Barton College and Arts on Douglas, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and Wynn Bone Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland. Her numerous group exhibitions include Drawing Discourse at the University of North Carolina, Asheville, and Root to Bloom at Principle Gallery, Alexandria, VA. Additionally, her paintings were featured in the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2020 and at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC in 2006. Pedigo was honored with a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant in 2006 and a Community Foundation of Northeast Florida Grant in 2016. Her artwork has been the cover art for the following publications: Ivory Tower: A journal of poetry published by the University of Delhi, Play Button: Poems by Liz Robbins published by Cider Press Review, and Minetta Review: a literary and arts publication at New York University. ARTIST STATEMENT My artistic practice focuses on a search for contentment and pleasure in undramatic everyday surroundings, emanating from a desire to generate gratitude for living. Author Sir Hustvedt wrote, “I love painting because in its immutable stillness it seems to exist outside of time in a way no other art can. The longer I live the more I would like to put the world in suspension and grip the present before it’s eaten by the next second and becomes the past.” Collectively, my artworks serve as a testament to being both mentally and physically present in the world; a direct consequence of recognizing the perplexing paradigm known as death. My revelation of life’s fragility has transformed my worldview and manifested in a practice of continually seeking gratification through the act of looking. Author Alain de Botton succinctly says, “It is in a dialogue with pain that many beautiful things acquire their value.” For me, this value is often translated through perceiving and recording transitive states of light. Light mediates our perception of the world and is highly influential in my life and to each of my artworks. Light is the singular requirement for all life and is the source of our perceived experience. Light is the arbiter of color, form, space, and ultimately visual memories.
  • Folk Is People
    Folk Is People
Music; Music: Composition; Music: Instrumental; Music: Vocal
Folk is People is a Jacksonville-based indie folk band led by singer-songwriter, Stacey Bennett. Their music is eloquently crafted into a melodic blend of stringed and percussive instruments backed by Bennett’s driving voice. Each song is a story meticulously written into verse and chorus. Folk is People came to life in 2012 as a folk duo with members Stacey Bennett and Rick Grice. After releasing an EP and touring, the pair took on other endeavors and the project was halted with no revival date in sight. Bennett resurrected the project in 2015 after becoming what she describes as “incessantly mundane” and enlisted Grice to engineer and produce the new album. Folk is People’s first full-length album The Devil Always Comes was released on October 25, 2016. The record sounds like indie rock married a folk song and started a pop band. It is a conceptual piece depicting the inner dissonance experienced when we reflect on and attempt to reconcile misdeeds in the present pursuit of virtue.

Since the age of 2, according to an anecdote shared by my mother, music has become and maintains to be an inseparable facet of my life. "He was a baby, just learning to walk, but on this particularly day with an excited burst of energy, his few steps turned into a hurried run, and ::SMASH:: , quickly made his acquaintance with his uncles guitar." As a drummer, songwriter and visual artist, My work is to continue to spread what I hold. Home is the ancient city of St. Augustine, FL, which along with creating a name for myself I hope to help nurture into a musical hub. My musical stylings range anywhere from soft whispery ballads to full on rock and roll. Depending on the project or occasion you'll find the sounds are rooted in Rock and Soul.

They pull you in with Jon Bailey's voice and live vocal looping harmonies and finger-picking guitar blended with Corey Peterson's melodic saxophone lines and colorful keyboard chords sprinkled with bass lines and Questlove style drum beats. Since entering juried exhibits, Ms. Pierson has received accolades for many of her works in pastel as well as watercolor. Her art can be seen at the Cultural Center in Ponte Vedra, in the St Augustine Art Association and other venues. Artist’s Statement: I like to work in Watercolor, but I love to work in pastel. Because there are no brushes or other instruments between me and the color – just grab a stick of pure pigment - it is exhilarating! I feel I have never not been an artist. I make art because It gives me so much joy. It excites me to think I can create something new. Sounds trite, but that’s it. The most challenging aspect about being an artist is finding a place, in your home, in your community, in your life - to find your space. I find that I need to paint every day – even if just for 15 minutes. When I come to the end of a painting, add my signature and install the piece, I hope to take the viewer inside the painting – to make them wonder. For my 21st birthday, a friend of mine gave me a stack of CDs. They had a blue front, and drawn on each one was a replication of the cover, the artist, or something that pertained to the album at hand. After a long night of sitting in my room, listening to music, and trying to compose, I realized that the sun was about to ambush my personal time. I flipped through the folder of CD's, and pulled out John Fahey's "Requia." It taught me how to do my laundry, install vinyl siding, navigate orgies with ease, and play guitar. "Requiem For Mississippi John Hurt" beat up the Beatles and bested Bob Dylan in the music book of my life.
