    Dewey Via Band
Music; Music: Composition; Music: Instrumental; Music: Vocal
Originally from Ettrick, VA, with a deep connection to his family’s musical roots in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Dewey has been performing on stage since he was eight years old. Making music for virtually his entire life, his versatility has led him from events like the Virginia State Gospel Championship and the Galax Fiddler’s Convention as a child guitar player and singer. Then on to years of leading Pentecostal music-filled worship as a young man while working 20 years as a plumber to support his family. This all led him to become the full-time powerhouse he is today. After picking his way through Virginia and the Carolinas, Dewey made his way down to Saint Augustine, Florida which has been his home base since 2007. Called a "contagious ball of energy" as well as a "lighthearted performance", he is considered amongst the best a “musician’s musician” and has made his mark as the best flat-pick guitarist in all of Northeast Florida. His unique talent has attracted veteran performers from the Florida music scene like Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers who is credited on Dewey’s all original CD “Likes of the Man in Black” and Banner Thomas, a founding member of Molly Hatchet, whom Dewey was honored to call his bassist in the Dewey Via Band for several years until he passed in 2017. Dewey is recognized all over for both his extensive number of radio-worthy original songs and his ability to take a song from any genre and deliver it with his own unique spin. As well as acoustically recreate the electric sounds of greats like Jimi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers, and even Prince. With a seemingly endless music catalog ranging from classic country to unexpected renditions of hits throughout multiple decades, which is often called “From Hank to Hendrix”, he is known for his great adaptability to all styles of music. His performances are said to be nothing less than dynamic; a country-raised southern boy who brings a larger-than-life personality to the stage. Dewey is known to be relatable through his authentic love for his craft and his fans. In that same spirit as well as accommodating a vast expanse of requests he goes where both the music and the fans take him. There is never a setlist or two shows that are ever the same. Both a prolific guitar player, outstanding songwriter, and powerful vocalist, Dewey has developed a core following of fans from all over the USA, Canada, and Europe and has become a local favorite. He can always be found at Mi Casa Cafe on St. Augustine’s bustling St. George Street where he has been the house musician for more than a decade and regularly performs four shows a week. He also performs at a number of other local establishments and depending on the particular week or time of year can play anywhere from five to nine shows in a week and generally, around 275 shows a year.  Special appearances include; in St. Augustine: the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival, The Vilano Music Fest, The Cathedral Parish Fair, The North Florida Egg Fest, the Sing Out Loud Festival and the Lincolnville Porch Festival as well as numerous charitable events. The list continues with many years at Daytona Bike Week and Biketoberfest, The Mustang Festival in the Outer Banks of North Carolina (where the lineup included artists such as Tim Reynolds and JJ Grey and Mofro) as well as three different Concert Hall appearances in Ontario, Canada.  He performs mainly as a solo artist but also fronts two bands: the Dewey Via Band; a power trio, and Moses Creek: a five-piece band.  He enjoys and does do private events by request on a limited basis where they can fit into his schedule as arranged by his wife Tara. Dewey has been featured in Ignition Magazine, Narrow Music Magazine, St. Augustine Social, Old City Life Magazine, and The St. Augustine Record; and won first place Best Local Band/Performer as well as the title of “Best Music” at Taste of St. Augustine at the Amphitheater three different years, was voted best band/performer in the St. Augustine Record’s Best of St. Augustine in 2018, second place for best band/performer in 2019, and voted best male vocalist in the Folio’s Best of St. Augustine in 2019.

    Dan Voellinger
    Visual Arts: Photography
Dan Voellinger grew up in Rochester, New York and was involved with photography at a young age.  He made his own pinhole camera which used polaroid film and also used cameras passed down when relatives upgraded to new ones.  Since many of his relatives worked for Eastman Kodak, photography was a popular discussion topic and activity.  He also worked for Eastman Kodak as an Intern for one year during his last year of High School.  As an employee of the Kodak Marketing Education Center he received free film and developing, before the digital age.  The experience of using film cameras through the years following the internship at Kodak had given him a greater understanding about planning and composing a shot since you didn't want to waste any film or incur the cost of developing bad shots. He has been working for the Navy for over thirty years and had the opportunity to travel the world, with his camera always in hand.  Japan had been his base for most all of the thirty years.  With the move to Florida a few years ago he’s had the chance to experience some amazing places here in the States, and the opportunity to meet and learn from many experienced photographers.  He loves to learn new things and ways to produce images that people will treasure. His work is carried at the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery on 137 West King St, St. Augustine, Florida

  • Basil Yothers
    Basil Yothers
    Literature: Non-Fiction; Visual Arts: Painting
My "Way" of painting derives from years of study, teacher feedback and practicing. As I mature, both  calmness and contentment have developed--essential factors--for success. Thus: aware of both heart and mind, I start painting by just " letting-myself-go"; a spontaneous outpouring of movement--similar to a dance of brush on paper surface. Colors chosen, brush rhythms, areas of washing or detail rendered--it all comes together somehow. As I begin,... a vague idea may be lingering, or a special feeling will be noticed. But no certain purpose, no 'fixed' destination, form or object will be decided upon... I  trust in my feelings. A confidence in myself helps. Contemplating the vagueness  in layered washes--suggestions and guidance occurs; I trust in whatever images, ideas and forms,  call to me,  or become attractive. Because ' All of Creation', on the largest of scale, moves me most deeply:  Seas, Skies with Cloud-- Mountains and Valleys, oftentimes are conjured up. Maybe,... showing energies of the universe The spirit within,  finds  forms  (or pictures), and perspectives that "fit me" best. That  which you truly love the best--seem to best make paintings live. Oftentimes,  the brush's path, or strength,  reveals  a moment-to moment excitement of discovery--to additionally inspire the viewer, as it did the painter! I never attempt to mirror outside reality or use photographs, but rely on subjective imagination, fantasy and unconscious, hidden memories, (which may prove symbolic).
  • The Young Step
    The Young Step
Music; Music: Composition; Music: Instrumental; Music: Vocal
Ben Whitson (vocals, guitar) - Micah Gilliam (guitar, keys, vocals) - Lauren Gilliam (bass, vocals, guitar) The Young Step makes music that’s fantastically untethered to any point in time, a wide-eyed form of rock & roll much too imaginative to be aligned with the past or the present. With their thoughtful intensity and disarming lack of self-seriousness, their equal affinity for Zen poetry and Sade slow jams, the St. Augustine-based trio made their debut with 2016’s "El Clàsico" —an album mixed and mastered by engineer Matt Boynton (MGMT, Kurt Vile) at the legendary Magic Shop in Manhattan. And while "El Clàsico" unfolds in flashes of new wave, art-punk, and spaced-out psych-rock, The Young Step ultimately remains genre-agnostic, slipping into whichever style best articulates their strange and outlandish moods at any given moment. On their new single “Ghost Town,” The Young Step shift from the sometimes-feral power of "El Clàsico" —an album built on heavy bass and unruly guitar work, thrashing drums and wild vocals—and drift toward a smooth-and-breezy sophisti-pop sound. With its warm guitar tones and gentle grooves, “Ghost Town” proves to be both escapist and unsettling, its lyrics speaking to the existential complexities of the band’s adopted hometown (e.g., the ravages of recent hurricanes, the real and/or metaphorical haunting inevitable in America’s Oldest City). “It’s also about what it’s like living in a beach town—how you have to be really conscious about doing something with yourself here, instead of getting sucked into the status quo of the beach-town life,” Lauren adds. Each originally from the Midwest, the three band members moved to St. Augustine within the last decade, forming The Young Step in summer 2015 and now all living together (along with Micah and Lauren’s two-year-old daughter). El Clàsico arrived in December 2016, offering a low-key and unaffected exploration of secular spirituality, largely inspired by the trio’s fascination with philosophers like Terence McKenna and Alan Watts. “Instead of humming like monks, we wanted to write rock & roll songs about all this shit going on in our minds,” notes Micah. Centered on the yin-yang dynamic of Ben’s shadowy baritone and Lauren’s crystalline lilt, the album delivers songs like “Nature Man” (a groove-driven and dreamy ode to pastoral living, accompanied by a Ben-directed video) and “Yoga” (a gloriously shimmering tête-à-tête on the metaphysical implications of lusting after a fellow student in yoga class). To support "El Clàsico," The Young Step headed out on a tour strategically booked in cities where the Gilliams had friends or family on hand to take care of their then-three-month-old baby. With their live history also including a performance at SXSW 2018—as well as a 2016 gig that made The Young Step the first local act to play the St. Augustine Amphitheatre—the band’s early shows marked Ben’s first-ever onstage experience. “I’d maybe done an open mic here or there, but for the most part everything we do is a first for me in music,” he says. On the other hand, Lauren has spent years playing with Micah in a folk duo called The WillowWacks, while Micah himself is a lifelong musician who’s toured internationally and runs his own recording studio. As revealed in “Ghost Town,” Micah’s skilled musicianship contrasts beautifully with the novice status of Ben (a filmmaker) and Lauren (a professional blown-glass artist). “Because Lauren and I don’t really know anything about music theory, we’ll sometimes come up with something that’s a little weird or off, and then Micah will tell us: ‘That’s actually really cool—I never would’ve thought of that,’” says Ben. At the same time, the band have purposely embraced a free-form creative approach in which the songwriting and recording process are often intertwined, allowing for the unfiltered spontaneity that makes The Young Step’s music so utterly original. “There are some songs where the guitar tracks are the first thing I played after plugging my guitar in—it’s what immediately came out when I had that first idea for a song,” says Micah. “Usually what you hear on a record is something that’s been already played 20 times and analyzed and refined, but this way there’s no time for overthinking; it’s just what was created before any thinking happened at all. There’s something really special about getting something down right when the inspiration hits.”
