The St. Augustine/St. Johns County Visitor Information Center will sponsor a book signing by Ann Browning Masters, author of Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle Whip Crackers: Poetry of St. Augustine Sunday, December 6 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. The Visitor Information Center is located at 10 S. Castillo Drive, St. Augustine.
Recently published by the Florida Historical Society Press, Masters’ book describes common life in St. Augustine through oral traditions from after the Civil War through the Civil Rights Movement. Giving voice to a rich slice of Americana, it illustrates how Floridano, Menorcan, and Cattle-Whip Cracker lives drifted toward overlapping worlds, and became the roots of a heritage that still exists in St. Augustine.
A St. Augustine native, Dr. Masters is a 12th generation Floridian. Her heritage includes being a Floridana, a descendant of Spanish settlers during Florida’s First Spanish Period. She is also a Menorcan, a descendant of the Italian, Greek and Menorcan colony who came to St. Augustine in 1777 during Florida’s British Period.
