Dan Voellinger has developed an eye for recognizing and composing the “money” shot before he even lifts the camera. His experienced eye and questioning mind observe the world as he moves through it, looking for the unique perspective of an iconic scene. Dan is often seen roaming the streets of St. Augustine and surrounding areas with a camera in his hand. His photographs have become popular with collectors and visitors alike.
Dan was involved with photography at a young age. He grew up in Rochester, New York surrounded by family members who worked for Eastman Kodak. Photography was a popular discussion topic and activity, all before the digital age. He made his own pinhole camera which used polaroid film and also used cameras passed down when relatives upgraded. He worked for Eastman Kodak as an Intern for one year during his last year of high school and received free film and developing materials. The experience of using film cameras through the years has given him a greater understanding of planning and composing a shot to prevent wasting film and incurring the cost of developing bad shots.
Dan has been working for the Navy for over thirty-five years and has had the opportunity to travel the world with his camera always in hand. Japan had been his base for almost thirty years. With the move to Florida seven years ago, he’s photographed numerous locations and National Parks out west, from Glacier over to Yosemite, into Utah and Arizona, and the Great Smoky Mountains in the East. Additionally, he’s enjoyed the opportunity to meet and learn from many experienced photographers. He loves to learn new techniques and create unique images that people will treasure. He is one of the winners in The St. Johns County Cultural Council’s 200th Anniversary Photography Contest which will be displayed during the 200th Anniversary Exhibition opening July 19, 2021, at the County Administration Building.
Dan is also offering a free “BYOC (Bring Your Own Camera) Workshop” to share his expertise on Friday, July 16, from 9-11:00 AM at Butterfield Garage. This workshop is open to the public and offers the opportunity to ask camera questions from an expert to learn new techniques to capture the best images with your camera. Computers will be available with large monitors to provide feedback on what can be done in Photoshop to improve your photos. Seating is limited to 15 people. Dan is one of the Directors at the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery which carries the works of four photographers making this a “must-see” gallery in St. Augustine, Florida. The gallery is open 7 days a week from 11 AM -5 PM, and until 9 PM on First Fridays.
