To quote from Dr. Delgado, “In 2012, oil and gas exploration off the Louisiana and Texas coasts discovered what appeared to be three shipwrecks in more than 4000 feet of water. In two follow up missions, archaeologists, marine biologists, oceanographers and other scientists used deep sea robots to explore, map and conduct a limited archaeological excavation of one wreck, which may be a wooden-hulled armed schooner from the early 1800s. The project team broadcast its work live via the Internet to a global audience of millions. They also discovered two other wrecks, dating to the same time. All three appear to have been sailing together, only to be lost to a violent storm that sent them down with no one left alive to tell their tale….until now. Dr. James Delgado helped organize and lead this project, which offers a unique window into a period in Gulf coast history in which empires fell, new nations were born, piracy, privateering, and battles at sea were commonplace, and personalities like Jean Lafitte, Andrew Jackson, and Simon Bolivar dominated the region.”
