Batik is a type of resist-printing process that originated in Indonesia in which wax is applied to the fabric in specific areas to prevent dye from reaching the fibers. Once the fabric is submerged in dye, it’s boiled to remove the wax. The end result gives a crackled appearance to cotton and creates a unique, almost patternless look that batik is known for.
This event is free and no registration is required to attend.
This demonstration is presented in conjunction with the St. Johns Cultural Council’s newest Art in Public Spaces exhibition, Threading the Margins. See textiles from seventeen St. Johns County fiber artists at the County Administration Building from September 5th through November 30th.
