Krysten Cunningham: Layout

Krysten Cunningham: Layout

Presented by Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College at Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College

Over the past several years, LA-based artist Krysten Cunningham has made sculpture that explores the woven textile as a sculptural object. Cunningham's work is conversant with the history of sculpture as well as that of feminist textile production, often balancing qualities such as masculine vs. feminine, hard vs. soft, and industrial vs. handmade in an attempt to upend the hierarchies implicit between the two.

Layout will present a new body of work, including sets of over-sized industrial fabricated bookends and weaving loom parts paired with hand-woven textiles. These objects probe the relationship between text and textile, textile and tool by analyzing the way language, labor, technology and gender are "interlocked in the history of textile production."

Support for this exhibition was provided through a grant from The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida.
