Friends is excited to welcome Sonja D. Williams, professor and award-winning radio producer, to talk to us about the subject of her first book, Word Warrior: Richard Durham, Radio, and Freedom. As always, this signature Brown Bag Lunch Program is  free and open to the public and seating is limited. General admission tickets (limit two) will be distributed beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the day of the program on a First Come / First Served basis. Advance reservations will no longer be taken. Doors will open at 12:00 noon and the program will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Ms. Williams is a professor in the Department of Media, Journalism, and Film at Howard University and has produced features and documentaries for National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio International (PRI), the Smithsonian Institution, and numerous local radio stations. Among the awards she has received for her work with these organizations are three consecutive George Foster Peabody Awards for producing Black Radio: Telling It Like It Was, Making the Music, and Wade in the Water: African American Sacred Music Traditions. In her book Word Warrior, Ms. Williams documents the life of radio broadcast dramatist, journalist, political strategist and freedom fighter Richard Durham. Durham’s award-winning radio series Destination Freedom aired in the late 1940s and his dramas earned him a posthumous induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007.
