Warm Winter Wonders at Plum Gallery

What a wondrous, diverse collection of artists begin the season at Plum Gallery located in downtown St. Augustine at the expanded space at 10 Aviles St.

Let’s start with Cindy Capehart, She enjoys photography, drawing, printmaking and painting; painting in oils on canvas has become her primary means of expression. Capehart has found her inspiration in the natural world, finding beauty in unexpected places.  She takes a different view of the landscape by focusing closely on the subject. The subject then becomes the geometric design created by the vegetation and its cast shadow or reflection. In designing such a composition based on patterns in nature Capehart is exploring the abstract qualities inherent in nature. What results is a bold and dynamic painting that also evokes a sense of intimacy as well as unexpected tranquility.

Joe Segal is New Yorks gift to Lincolnville where he lives with his photographer wife, Theresa. Segal came to St. Augustine to study at Flagler College where he studied sculpture with Enzo Torcoletti. The two still occasionally collaborate on projects. Segal works primarily with wood. It seems he reaches into the souls of the wood to bring out its inner essence. His work is seen in many countries.

Jeanne Hollington also chooses the natural world around her to express her amazement and joy she finds there. Many will find a feeling of ‘wow, I’ve seen that before!’ when viewing her wonderfully colorful images. Hollington says  "To have my work add something new to the ancient and venerable tapestry of this glorious city is a dream come true!" .

Reed Dixon is from Pennsylvania and now lives in Boynton Beach, Fl. Perhaps his work can be described as dreamlike reality. His techniques capture very specific crisp reality but his execution adds an unseen dimension. Reed says “ A friend of mine once told me there are no rules and I tend to believe him…”’
