St. Johns Reads Event: Everyday Life in the Jim Crow South

Presented by Southeast Branch Library at Southeast Branch Public Library

Dr. Michael Butler, Associate Professor of History at Flagler College, details the legal origins of Jim Crow. Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern United States. He explains how the law was applied throughout the South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as how often the violent enforcement of the laws sparked the civil rights movement.
