The Deeper Than Indigo: Southern Textile Symposium brings national scholars to St. Augustine and enlists a dozen regional cultural organizations to participate in this broad program.
The symposium provides an opportunity, during Flagler College’s 50th Anniversary, to investigate the rich history of St. Augustine and the Southeastern United States through the lens of the indigo trade and the repercussions of slavery and colonialism. The program offers an occasion to rethink the historical narrative related to the Atlantic slave trade through shared voices across a multitude of artistic practices and professions. St. Augustine has historic and cultural ties with Georgia and Florida, including the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, a federal National Heritage Area.
Contact the program co-chairs for specific information as some of the components may include a fee.
