This course introduces the student to proven and time honored methods that lead to the understanding and internalization of the basic principles essential to the structure of a good drawing or painting: Composition, proportion, harmony, tone, amongst others.
Techniques practiced through various exercises will enable the student to explore and develop mastery of the line, shape, form, value, edge handling and color.
The student will develop the skills and freedom needed to express their artistic voice, starting from basic art principles and techniques, and eventually evolving to advanced methods.
Topics that will be discussed include:
- The importance of working from the direct observation of nature
- Tools, materials and how to handle and care for them
- Composition
- Blocking in, accurate drawing and proportion mastery
- Value studies
- Drawing transfer
- Grisaille
- Open grisaille (umber sketch) and underpainting
- Indirect and direct painting
- Color theory
- Modeling form
This course will prepare the student for more advanced and complex still life paintings during the winter session.
All artistic levels are encouraged to complete the proposed exercises in order to review the necessary techniques and principles, unless the student has had previous classical painting training. Option to complete additional more in-depth exercises will be given on a one on one basis.
