Greek Landing Day 2019

Greek Landing Day 2019

Presented by St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine at St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine

The St. Photios Foundation honors the memory of the 500 Greek colonists who with 900 other persons throughout the Mediterranean Sea, were contracted to come to America as indentured servants with Andrew Turnbull.  Most arrived in St. Augustine on June 26, 1768, only a third survived to return to St. Augustine as New Smyrna refugees.

For the past three decades, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese has held a memorial in their honor and the City of St. Augustine proclaims itself Greek for the day.  Music and hospitality will be provided from 3-6:00 p.m.

At 3:00 p.m. the public is invited to attend a lecture with Dr. William Samonides, curator of the special exhibits, Priests and Parishes of the South: A Profound and Abiding Presence.

The Greek Landing Day memorial will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Shrine Chapel on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 with Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta officiating and joined by Bishop Sevastianos of Zela, Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos, and His Excellency, Bishop Felipe Estevez of St. Augustine.

A solemn procession to the Tolomato Cemetery will begin at 5:00 p.m.  There, the clergy will bless the grave sites and St. Photios Foundation 1st VP Archon Dr. Manuel N Tissura will lay a wreath at the headstone of Mary Ioannopolis Darling.

The Honorable George Gardner, former mayor of St. Augustine will read the City of St. Augustine Greek Landing Day Proclamation.
