33rd Annual ‘Great Chowder Debate’ to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Johns County

Presented by Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Johns County at The Conch House

Love chowder?  Love different kinds of chowder?  Want to try as many chowders as possible in St. Augustine?  Then join us for the 33rd annual “Great Chowder Debate”!  Originated by The Conch House in 1984, the “Great Chowder Debate” is one of the longest-running chowder championships in the country.   David Ponce, founder and owner of The Conch House had the idea of the original “Great Chowder Debate” after a discussion with his chef regarding whether Minorcan or New England Chowder was the best.  “We’ll let the people decide!” stated Mr. Ponce and the Great Chowder Debate was born.   The “Great Chowder Debate” now offers more than the two original options.  Local restaurants compete for the ultimate chowder bragging rights by entering their specialty chowders in one of five categories:  Minorcan Conch, Minorcan Clam, New England Clam, Seafood, and Non-Seafood.  There is also the People’s Choice, voted on by the public so patrons are encouraged to make their vote count!   In addition to the delicious chowder, the main goal of the “Great Chowder Debate” is to help raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Johns County (BBBS).  All proceeds from the festival are donated to BBBS.  BBBS serves children through-out St. Johns County with the mission of providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
