Wednesday Brown Bag Lunch Program - Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings: Letters from the Creek (Cancelled)

Presented by Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine at Unknown

Rawlings’ letters from her beloved farm at Cross Creek reveal the author’s perspective on her celebrity after winning the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Yearling, her growing struggle with creative insecurities, and her search for an abiding home. “It seems to me,” Rawlings once wrote, “that I want one of two things: roots in the earth, a home life that radiates from that earth; or an absolutely gypsy-like existence, without ties without dogs or cats or material belongings.” This presentation draws upon the correspondence of the author and particularly the letters between Rawlings and her husband Norton S. Baskin housed in the Rawlings Archive at the University of Florida.

Presenter Deborah Dickey is a freelance director and playwright who is currently a member of the Board of Directors of A Classic Theatre, Inc. In 2018, she was one of the recipients of a ROWITA Award honoring women for achievement in the arts in St. Johns County. Her recent directing credits include Ripcord, For the Love of Shakespeare at A Classic Theatre and Intimate Apparel, Me and Jezebel and The Odd Couple at Actors Warehouse (Gainesville).

Deborah’s musical play, Sweet Emmaline: The Musical Journey of Debbie McDade, premiered at ACT in the spring of 2016. In addition, her play Threads of Silver and Gold: Women of the Panama Canal, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal, was produced by ACT and premiered in the Republic of Panama in the summer of 2016 as a fundraiser for the Márcia L. Henry Foundation. In 2012, her play Cross Roads: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Norton S. Baskin in Unguarded Moments was presented by ACT in its premiere production at Flagler College. Other local directing credits include Is Life Worth Living? and My Friend Zelma, both for the ACT.

Deborah was a member of the University of Arizona’s Theatre Studies and Directing faculty and has directed in professional and educational theatre for over 30 years. Some of her professional directing credits include Molly Sweeney, Steel Magnolias, and a production of David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre which was invited to perform at the International Conference on American Theatre and Drama in Malaga, Spain.
