Celebrate the beginnings of our Nation’s Oldest City with cannon fires, Pedro Menendez, and cake!
St. Augustine, the Nation’s Oldest City, has a rich and diverse history that makes our town unique. This year marks the 455th anniversary of the founding of our ancient city by Pedro Menendez de Aviles. The Historic Florida Militia and the living history community in St. Augustine believes this important date is worthy of recognition and celebration. With that in mind, there will be a First Thanksgiving Celebration 2020 at the Fountain of Youth.
The ceremony starts with a cannon firing followed by flags and musket firings. Pedro Menendez and his Entourage (living history interpreters) will march through the front gate of the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. We will celebrate The First Thanksgiving which took place in St. Augustine on September 8, 1565, 55 years before the Pilgrim’s ever landed on Plymouth Rock. After a brief word and a blessing, guests will be treated to cake to celebrate the occasion.
Please join us to help commemorate this important date in our city’s history. The latest COVID-19 precautions will be followed.
Regular park admission rates apply, with half price entrance for St. John’s County residents.
