Unique, immersive, interactive event reenacting the perilous flight of Africans who are escaping enslavement on British plantations and seeking freedom in St. Augustine, circa 1738. Reenactment unfolds on the actual historic site.
Step onto the Freedom Trail at Fort Mose Historic State Park, and leap back in time!
Encounter Fort Mose Historical Society reenactors as they draw you into a dangerous world where Africans flee from enslavement on British plantations and seek freedom in Spanish Florida. Experience formation of the original Underground Railroad through assistance from Natives. Share the fears, sacrifices, and hopes of the freedom seekers as they undergo their perilous journey across 300 miles of swamps, forests, and waterways.
Triumphantly emerge from the Trail at Fort Mose, site of the first free legally sanctioned free Black community in the land that became the United States. You will be personally greeted by Captain Francisco Menendez, leader of the free Black Fort Mose militia, valiantly guarding St. Augustine’s northern border. Witness a live militia muster. Explore daily life in the Mose community, meeting free African men, women, and children at work and play.
