The November feature artist at Butterfield will showcase the mixed media “gourd” sculptures Jan Miller has been doing for the past several years. She tells us,“I have long been a fan of Tim Burton and that has certainly influenced my work”.
The artist will be at Butterfield Garage Gallery on Friday, November 5 from 4-7:30 PM and on Sunday, November 7 from 2-5 PM when she will demonstrate painting and welcome art discussions.
Drawing on many years of experience in both painting and mixed media, the one-of-a-kind gourd characters are fun and innovative. The natural shape can affect the direction the sculpture then takes, along with the recycled cans, vases, and bottles that ultimately become the body. Found objects, paper clay, paper mache, and acrylic paint are used to complete the gourd sculpture.
Jan Miller established her career in Chicago where she attained a modest reputation as a still-life painter prior to relocating to St. Augustine, Florida. In addition to doing her art, Jan Miller has also been involved in the Art Community in St. Augustine where she founded the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery in 1999. The old building had formerly been a real garage and the original sign which is stamped 1929, was hung in its original place outside. The contemporary gallery now exhibits some of the best local artists in the area.
