"Lincolnville Thru Time" by Theresa Segal at Lincolnville Museum & Cultural Center

Presented by Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center at Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center

The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center announces the opening of a new exhibit at the museum, Lincolnville Thru Time, featuring work by local artist Theresa Segal. Segal is a southern photographer who earned her B.A. in Art at Flagler College and studied photography at the Southeast Center for Photography at Daytona State College and the University of North Florida. She was born in St. Augustine in 1965 and has lived in Lincolnville for over 30 years with her husband, sculptor Joe Segal.

Lincolnville Thru Time is a collection of photographs by Segal that are predominantly black & white images including houses, streetscapes, and public spaces with a distinct Southern Gothic aesthetic. Photographic prints accompanied by a digital display span the 1990s and following decades. The images focus on light and form, often creating tableaus that evoke the neighborhood’s intangible character. There are no people in the photographs but the evidence of them furthers the perception of memory.

Theresa Segal’s work has been shown in museums throughout the State of Florida including Lightner Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, and the Foosaner Art Museum in Melbourne, where twenty of her photographs are part of their permanent collection. Segal’s projects have included explorations of rural Florida, the attics of the Lightner Museum, and cultural exchanges with Baracoa, Cuba. Her subject matter includes landscapes, interiors, and light studies. Most of her work has been in traditional photographic processes, though she also works with digital. She has received numerous grants for her work, including a 2020 grant for Individual Artists from the Community Foundation of Northeast Florida, which helped fund this exhibition.

Lincolnville Thru Time will be on display until February 26, 2022, Tuesdays through Saturdays 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM. This exhibit was funded by The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida.
