Cultural Lights of St. Augustine with historian David Nolan

Presented by St. Johns County Public Library - Main Library at The Waterworks

Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine is pleased to welcome author and historian David Nolan who will highlight some of the famous authors, artists, and musicians who have lived or visited St. Augustine over the years. Mr. Nolan will discuss various luminous figures who left their mark on the community, as well as how St. Augustine left a mark on them. He will touch on authors such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Zora Neale Hurston; artists like Martin Johnson Heade, Randolph Caldecott, and Jacob Lawrence; and musical figures such as composer Frederick Delius and performer Ray Charles.

This program is free, open to the public, and will take place at The Waterworks, 184 San Marco Avenue, which shares a parking lot with the Main Library.

David Nolan lectures on historic, architectural, and literary subjects. He received the annual author's award from the Council of Florida Libraries for his first book, Fifty Feet in Paradise. In 1995 he collaborated with artist Jean Ellen Fitzpatrick and photographer Ken Barrett to produce The Houses of St. Augustine, a bestselling book about the Ancient City and its historic buildings. He was a founder of ACCORD, a group designed to honor the participants in the St. Augustine movement during the Civil Rights Movement, and in 2009 he was awarded both the Governor's Points of Light Award for outstanding community service and the President's Volunteer Service Award, awarded by Barack Obama on the 45th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
