The Moscow City Ballet was founded by the Russian choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov in 1988. A private enterprise not subsidized by the government, the Moscow City Ballet (MCB) is one of Russia's most extensively touring ballet companies, with appearances in Belgium, Cyprus, Egypt, Holland, Hong-Kong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Estonia, The People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Republic Korea, R.O.C. Taiwan, Singapore, The United Kingdom, and the United States. Smirnov-Golovanov's productions, as well as his versions of the classical ballets, are of the highest choreographic quality.
The principals include Ukraine native Sergei Zolotarov, member of the Moscow City Ballet since 2001, who graduated from the Kharkov Choreographic School and the Kiev Choreographic School. He is best known for his leading roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Cinderella. The female lead, Valeria Guseva, joined the MCB in 2006, having previously performed with the St Petersburg and the Russian National Ballet. Other principals include Talgat Kozhabaev and Lilia Orekhova.
The company’s corps de ballet (the non-soloists) are in the best traditions of the Russian school of classical ballet, and its characteristic style has been ensured by the unceasing efforts, both in production and rehearsal, of its artistic director, Victor Smirnov-Golovanov and his wife, Ludmila Nerubashenko, who, since Smirnov-Golovanov’s death in 2013, now directs the company.
