Sinfonia Toronto

Presented by EMMA Concert Association at Flagler College - Lewis Auditorium

EMMA Concert Association presents Sinfonia Toronto on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College.

Founded in 1998 by Maestro Nurhan Arman, Sinfonia Toronto is now considered one of Canada’s finest chamber orchestras. Acclaimed as “a world-class ensemble, it consists of thirteen virtuoso strings who perform standing, in the tradition of great European chamber orchestras, blending each musician’s soloistic energy and passion into a brilliant ensemble style under Nurhan Arman’s inspired direction. The orchestra’s repertoire includes all the major compositions for string orchestra from the Baroque through Classical, Romantic and 20th-Century eras.

Sinfonia Toronto’s first international tour in 2008 in Germany was a resounding success, resulting in reviews with headlines such as “A World-Class Ensemble,”’ “Sinfonia Toronto Inspires,” and “Sinfonia Toronto Thrilled the Audience.” The orchestra’s two-week tour of Spain in October 2010 was greeted with calls for encores at each performance, with a thrilling four encores demanded by the audience at the renowned l’Auditori in Barcelona.

Sinfonia Toronto’s Maestro Nurhan Arman has brought capacity crowds to their feet on three continents, appearing in France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Turkey, Armenia, South Korea, Mexico and throughout the United States and Canada. Critics on both sides of the Atlantic have been unanimous in their praise. Pravda hailed Maestro Arman as a “fascinating and striking musical personality,” while the Broadcast Review in Prague reported “a spirited and nobly rounded performance.”

Born to Armenian parents in Istanbul, he played his first violin recital at the age of 13. After arriving in the United States on a Disney Foundation scholarship, he concertized from coast to coast, appearing in major US cities as well as at prestigious music festivals in Tanglewood, Spoleto, New York and Florida. After several seasons of leading US orchestras as concertmaster, he embarked on a conducting career that has taken him all over the world.
