The Woman Behind Frederick Douglass: Anna Murray Douglass

The Woman Behind Frederick Douglass: Anna Murray Douglass

Presented by Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center and Woman's Exchange of St. Augustine at Peña-Peck House & Lincolnville Museum& Cultural Center

The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center and the Woman’s Exchange of St. Augustine invite you to celebrate African American history in St. Augustine from February 9-14.  Enjoy a week of interactive, educational, social, and fun activities to remember Anna Murray Douglass, wife of Fredrick Douglass, at the Cultural Center and at the historic Peña-Peck House.

Little is known about Anna Murray Douglass, but she was responsible for Frederick Douglass’s liberation and supported Frederick during his travels to speak for abolition, in addition to being a station manager for the Underground Railroad. There will be a collaborative exhibit located at both the LMCC and the Pena-Peck House featuring a rendition of Anna Murray’s wedding dress, designed by New York’s Cassandra Bromfield.

The dress had previously been featured at a Harlem Book Club celebration to commemorate Anna Murray Douglass and the abolitionist with a reenactment of their wedding reception after reading Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom by David Blight. The week will culminate with a celebration of Fredrick Douglass’s birthday on the 14th and a commemoration of St. Augustine’s many great thinkers and historic moments that helped shape history as we know it.
