Griffin Lotson is a seventh-generation Gullah Geechee descendant and African-American historian. Born in Crescent, Georgia, he is an expert cultural art performer, storyteller, teacher, manager of the internationally acclaimed Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters, author of Kumbaya, and serves as Vice Chairman of the National Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.

He has traveled extensively to West Africa, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Congo, and Egypt to research cultural connections in art and music. Lotson is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on the Gullah Geechee Ring Shout and the history of Kumbaya, which has landed him opportunities working for and with many local, national, and international documentaries, including the movie Roots and Oprah Winfrey's television production Queen Sugar. As a researcher and expert in the Gullah Geechee Culture, he is frequently called upon by schools, universities, and Colleges to render his knowledge of the Gullah Geechee culture.

He was recently selected to be a Global Goodwill Ambassador and received the State of Georgia's highest honor as an Outstanding Georgia Citizen. In 2020, he received the White House's President's Volunteer Service Award.
