Join St. Augustine artist Herrick H. Smith in a two-week kiln-building workshop building a 140 cubic foot anagama-style woodfired kiln. Participants will be guided through the process of layout and construction including arch-form-design, bricklaying, and casting refractory for optimal results. This is not a mere physical exercise but a formative step in the creative process. Participants will be expected to commit to a full week and arrive promptly each day. The fee covers a coffee bar, light breakfast, and lunch each day. Dress should include closed-toed shoes, sturdy shorts or pants (jeans are great), and a sturdy shirt. Gloves and safety glasses are provided.
Work will begin at 8:30 PM each day and continue until roughly 4 PM. Week 1 will include footprint layout, arch-form construction, and beginning walls. Week 2 is projected to finish laying brick including the chimney, build the buttress forms, and install the fiber and stucco coat.
Fee: $100 per Week (Week 1: Monday-Saturday 7/15-7/20)
(Week 2: Monday-Saturday 7/22-7/27)
Note: This is NOT a firing workshop. The first firing will be in the fall of 2024. Everyone who participates in constructing the kiln will earn a proportional amount of space in the inaugural firing.
