Films That Make a Difference "No Asylum"

Presented by St. Augustine Film Society and Compassionate St. Augustine at Unknown

The Golden Way and Compassionate St. Augustine will present the first regional showing of the award-winning documentary “No Asylum: The Untold Chapter of Anne Frank’s Story.” It is one of 40 “Voices of Hope” events being held regionally in conjunction with the Jacksonville Museum of Science and History’s Anne Frank Exhibit Jan 12th - Feb 12th and the only one taking place in St. Johns County.

“No Asylum,” explores Otto Frank’s failed attempts to get his wife and daughters Ann and Margot out of Germany following Hitler’s rise to power. The movie is considered a prequel to the stories about the Holocaust chronicled in Anne’s acclaimed diary.  Ultimately, the family fled to Amsterdam but once there, despite never giving up the attempts for his family to emigrate to the U.S., Frank’s application and appeals were repeatedly denied by the U.S. Immigration Service.

“No Asylum” traces the kind of moral catastrophe all too-familiar not only during the Nazi period but extending to the present: where do refugees go when countries close their doors to the stateless, the persecuted, to those fleeing for their lives from their homelands?

Dr. John Young, Associate Professor  at Flagler College, will moderate a discussion and Q & A with the audience following the film. Information on local services will be available. The event is free and open to the public and everyone is strongly encouraged to attend.
