Fort Mose: A Hidden Jewel with Dr. Dorothy Headley Israel

Fort Mose: A Hidden Jewel with Dr. Dorothy Headley Israel

Presented by Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine at Unknown

As part of our continuing celebration of historic St. Augustine, Friends is pleased to welcome back Dr. Dorothy H. Israel, Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University, New York, who will present Fort Mose: a Hidden Jewel.
A National Historic Landmark, Fort Mose: African American Community of Freedom, is the site of the first legally sanctioned free African settlement in the United States. Dr. Israel will share her thoughts and take the audience on a journey that begins before Africans landed in St. Augustine with Juan Garrido and Francisco Menendez, then moves to Fort Mose and its settlement, and continues through to today's experiences that influence the Nation’s Oldest City. She will be joined in her presentation by Roselyn "Riz" Cole, international storyteller/poet, and Carolyn Fields and Twila Hudson, local oral historians.
