An Evening with George Winston

An Evening with George Winston

Presented by St. Johns County Cultural Events Division at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall

With a career spanning nearly 50 years, George Winston is one of the most recognized and celebrated solo pianists on the globe – selling more than 15 million albums worldwide. Since the release of his debut album, Ballads and Blues in 1972, Winston has released 14 solo recordings. His latest, Spring Carousel: A Cancer Research Benefit, will directly benefit City of Hope, a not-for-profit clinical research center in California. Winston composed the album as he was in recovery from a bone marrow transplant for Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). Upon hearing Winston’s singular work on Spring Carousel, a depth of piano brilliance effortlessly sinks into one’s soul, never leaving the listener eager for anything other than the next swirling song on the recording.

Born in Michigan and raised in Montana, Mississippi, and Florida, Winston began playing organ in the mid-1960s. In 1971, he switched to the acoustic piano after hearing recordings from the 1920s and the 1930s by the legendary stride pianists Thomas “Fats” Waller and Teddy Wilson. Winston’s discernible style is a fusion of melodic folk piano, New Orleans R&B piano, and stride piano with live performances covering songs from his season favorites “Autumn,” “December,” “Winter Into Spring,” and “Summer,” as well as the music of Vince Guaraldi, the legendary composer for animated adaptations of the Peanuts comic strip. His inspiration stems from an eclectic array of musicians including The Doors, Randy Newman, and James Booker for a sound that is all his own.

Winston is presently concentrating mainly on live performances, and most of the time he is touring playing solo piano concerts (the Summer Show or the Winter Show), solo guitar concerts, solo harmonica concerts, and solo piano dances (with R&B and slow dance songs). After a career that spans 45 years, 14 albums, thousands of live performances, and more than 15 million albums sold worldwide, beloved melodic folk pianist George Winston is looking forward to a busy 2017-2018 touring schedule.
