Firearms forensic scientist Kristin Durfee separates truth from fiction when it comes to writing about firearms and forensic investigations at the FWA Ponte Vedra Writers meeting on Saturday, April 29 at the Ponte Vedra Library.
Writers who base their knowledge about firearms and forensics from television shows leave themselves open to issues of accuracy. Kristin Durfee, who works as a firearms forensic scientist, will help educate writers about these issues during her talk, “How to Commit the Perfect Murder (On Paper)” at the Saturday, April 29 meeting of the Ponte Vedra Writers. The group meets at 10:30 a.m. at the Ponte Vedra Library.
Kristin says, “Don’t risk throwing your reader out of your story because an incorrect term was used. Learn how to properly write about firearms, the laboratory’s role in solving your character’s death, and how to accurately portray courtroom testimony with an expert witness.”
She will address these specific points:
1) Teach correct types and terminology of firearms,
2) Give information about what the crime lab does, and doesn’t, do, and,
3) How it all ties together in court and in your book.
Kristin Durfee grew up outside of Philadelphia where an initial struggle with reading blossomed into a love and passion for the written word. She writes for Young Adult and Adults and has published two full-length novels as well as short stories. Kristin currently resides outside of Orlando, FL, and when not enjoying the theme parks or Florida sun, she spends most of her time with her husband, their son, and quirky dogs.
The Ponte Vedra Writers chapter is one of over 50 writers groups affiliated with the Florida Writers Association, a non-profit membership organization with nearly 1,500 members. Visit www.floridawriters,net for more information about the organization.
