Fiber Artist Network Juried Exhibition

Fiber Artist Network Juried Exhibition

Presented by Butterfield Garage Art Gallery at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery

Butterfield Garage will host a juried exhibition of contemporary fiber art by members of the Fiber Artists Network during March, with an opening reception during the First Friday Art Walk on March 6 from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m.

The Fiber Artist Network (FAN) is a group of multi-disciplinary artists working in a wide range of materials and techniques. This exhibition, juried by Miami-based, internationally acclaimed fiber artist Maya Schonenburger, features both two- and three-dimensional works in cloth, paper, plastic, and plant materials. In addition to wall hangings and framed pieces, the show includes art-to-wear, jewelry and baskets.

Although rooted in utilitarian craft, these cutting-edge pieces are far from traditional. The artists work with fiber as their preferred medium because of its tactility and versatility, and to make statements on political and social issues.

These intriguing and beautiful works also display a variety of techniques, from shibori dyeing to thread painting and nuno felting. Several pieces incorporate reclaimed materials, such as jewelry made from zippers and plastic bags and a dress stitched of used coffee filters coated with beeswax.

The exhibition will continue through March 31 at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, 137 King Street, St. Augustine. The gallery is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For further information, please call 904 825-4577, visit the website at www.butterfieldgarage.com, or contact Jan Miller at janmille@bellsouth.net
