The Night the Nazis Attacked Jacksonville Beach

The Night the Nazis Attacked Jacksonville Beach

Presented by Friends of the Ponte Vedra Library at Ponte Vedra Library

During the early months of World War II, German submarines roamed the Atlantic, picking off cargo ships and troop transports, seemingly at will. The war was brought shockingly close to home on April 10, 1942 when the oil tanker SS Gulf America was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Jacksonville Beach. Local businessman and amateur historian Scott Grant will present a program detailing that fateful night 75 years ago at a Ponte Vedra Forum program.

Grant is a Cornell graduate who worked on Wall Street while earning his law degree from Rutgers. Twelve years ago, he moved his family and investment business to Ponte Vedra Beach. Always a history buff, Grant researched details of many of the historical events impacting our area, and has shared them with civic clubs, senior centers, and other organizations throughout Northeast Florida.
