A Patchwork Quilt of American Music

A Patchwork Quilt of American Music

Presented by St. Augustine Chamber Singers at Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine

The St. Augustine Chamber Singers presents a concert that traces the arrival of unique musical expressions to the shores of America as immigrants from many countries brought their music with them. The program begins with several Native American chants and then follows the various patterns of people arriving in America including songs from England, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Cuba, Africa, Israel and the Middle East.

The Chamber Singers will be joined by instrumentalists Susan McGee, French horn and Caren Umbarger, violin. Several members of the St. Augustine Youth Chorus will perform body percussion; percussion players from Jacksonville University will play a multitude of instruments including congas, slat drums and djembes.

The concert will be sung in memory of Jack Page who died recently at the age of 93. Jack, a friend to all and especially to the musicians in our city, sang in our choirs, played his flute with us, formed a recorder ensemble, The Glad Melody Gang, and promoted music education in our schools. Jack gave unrelenting enthusiastic support and encouragement to all of us involved in music in St. Augustine.

The 28 voice Chamber Singers are directed by Kathleen Vande Berg. The collaborating accompanist is Barbara Mattingly. The concert is free; an offering will be received.
