History on the Streets Saunter

History on the Streets Saunter

Presented by Historic Florida Militia at Unknown

And now for something completely different. Well, sort of.

The historic reenactment community (through a partnership between the Historic Florida Militia, the City of Saint Augustine and the St John’s Cultural Council) will be conducting another “History on the Streets” saunter along Saint George Street and the historic area here in Saint Augustine. This one is going to be a little different. To coincide with the Downton Abby events going on in town, for this Saunter we are adjusting our time periods. Now, the TV series Downton Abbey portrayed events in England during the years 1912 through 1926. For this Saunter, we thought it would be great to do those years and to include our very own Flagler era, starting with the opening of the Ponce de Leon Hotel in 1888, and going all the way to the repeal of prohibition in 1933. That means Saunter participants can wear their “historically accurate” clothing spanning the years 1888 through 1933. ( That would include the Flagler Era, the Gilded Age, the Gatsby Era, WW I and Prohibition.) As with all of our saunters “historically accurate” is the key. Our saunters are always a lot of fun for the public as well as the participants and this one surely will be no exception. As always the purpose of these History on the Streets Saunters is for the participants to share the rich and diverse history of Saint Augustine with our visitors and residents. We encourage the city’s guests to take photographs and ask questions.
