Dia de Los Difuntos / The Day of the Deceased

Presented by Florida Living History at Tolomato Cemetery

Florida Living History, Inc. (FLH), partnering with the Tolomato Cemetery Preservation Association (TCPA), will offer a new heritage Event focusing on the ancient Spanish tradition of El Dia de los Difuntos (“The Day of the Deceased”), when families and friends celebrate and joyfully honor the memory of their loved ones who have died.  From 11AM to 3PM, the TPCS and FLH will discuss and demonstrate the historic customs associated with this holiday and still used by Hispanic cultures to prepare for All Souls Day.  FLH volunteers will portray some of the notable historical personages interred in the Tolomato Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in the continental United States (founded c. 1737).

In addition, at 7PM, FLH will present the traditional Marcha de la Santa Compaña (“The March of the Holy Company”), a night-time, torch-lit procession through downtown St. Augustine, with historical re-enactors representing the souls of “the Noble and Loyal City’s” citizens over the past 400 years.  This Event will end at 8PM with an abbreviated, candle-lit production of the play, Don Juan Tenorio, a time-honored part of Dia de los Difuntos celebrations, illustrating the redemptive power of true affection and the triumph of love over death itself.
