Dr. Thomas Graham will discuss his latest book, Silent Films in St. Augustine on Monday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ponte Vedra Library.
The Ponte Vedra Library’s popular Book Talk Café program returns with a fascinating look at local filmmaking history. Dr. Thomas Graham will discuss his latest book, Silent Films in St. Augustine on Monday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ponte Vedra Branch Library.
Dr. Graham’s book chronicles the earliest days of the film industry before it settled in Hollywood, and was centered on the East Coast. Between 1906 and 1926 more than 120 films were made in St. Augustine, starring early film stars like Rudolph Valentino, Ethel Barrymore, Theda Bara, and Oliver Hardy. The book tells stories of the leading film producers and actors who escaped New York winters to keep the studio doors open in St. Augustine’s sunshine and warm weather.
Dr. Graham is professor emeritus of history at Flagler College, and author of several books including Mr. Flagler’s St. Augustine.
As with all Book Talk Café programs, the author will sign copies of his books and light refreshments will be served.
