They Might Be Giants

They Might Be Giants

Presented by St. Johns County Cultural Events Division at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall

“After 30 years, They Might Be Giants retain the virtues that have endeared them to everyone from indie-favoring hipsters to the preschool set.” – USA Today

They Might Be Giants have been delivering highly energetic, highly melodic and highly imaginative music for over 30 years. They write, record and perform continuously. Brooklyn’s original alternative rockers have sold over 4 million records, released 20 studio albums, won two GRAMMY awards and have played over 2,000 shows across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. They have created DVD and book projects for kids, contributed themes and songs to numerous television and film projects and hold the title for most appearances (13) made by any rock band on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

With John Linnell on accordion and sax, John Flansburgh on guitar, and a drum machine, They Might Be Giants (TMBG) took the 1980s NYC music scene by storm. They quickly became known for their catchy melodies, unusual subject matter, and clever wordplay, and attracted a huge following with their unique showmanship. The first TMBG shows included oversized props, cardboard masks, and one song for which the only accompaniment was a huge stick John F. banged on the stage. When John L. broke his wrist biking and John F.’s apartment was burgled, TMBG started recording one song a day on their answering machine. They advertised “Dial-A-Song” in the Village Voice and fans started calling in to hear their music. The Brooklyn phone number charged the caller, so TMBG used the tagline: “Free When You Call From Work.” There was only phone line and Dial-A-Song soon became so popular that it took fans days of calling just to get connected.

Now, 2018 just got a whole lot better! Brooklyn’s Ambassadors of Love – They Might Be Giants- are back with a brilliant new studio album, I Like Fun; they’re back with their Dial-A-Song service at www.dialasong.com, and they’re back on the road with a new show featuring an expanded line-up of musicians. This new set will include all-time favorites, fresh rarities spanning their epic career, and spur-of-the-moment improvisations that will delight even their exhausted road crew. To be direct: this show is not to be missed!

They Might Be Giants has always been dedicated to keeping each performance a high-volume celebration of the band’s original music. It’s always spontaneous and occasionally ribald (that means just for adults, everybody! No kids admitted!) and now for the first time, they’re on a full tour with show-stopping trumpet genius Curt Ramm (Nile Rogers, Bruce Springsteen)!
