Threads of Silver and Gold: Women of the Panama Canal

Threads of Silver and Gold: Women of the Panama Canal

Presented by A Classic Theatre at Unknown

Written by Deborah B. Dickey in honor of the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal, the play looks at the role of women who arrived from the West Indies, England and the United States during the construction period in Panama. Dr. Paul Ortiz, Director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida describes “Threads of Silver and Gold” as “an intimate and compelling portrayal of life in the Panama Canal Zone. Told through the voices of women from the West Indies, England and the United States, this play is a poignant and powerful rendition of life as it was experienced by people from different backgrounds in the Panama Canal.” Director/Playwright Deborah B. Dickey has selected a talented group of nine actors to portray the fifteen colorful characters in the production.  Taking the challenging role of Theodore Roosevelt is Kelly McTaggart of St. Augustine.  Also from St. Augustine are Chelsye P. Ginn, Shiray Thomas, Carmel Rowley, Joy Manning, Vanessa Warner and Jan LoPresti-Beach. Coming from Jacksonville are Patric Robinson and Toni L. Philips. Performances are at 7:30 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Oct. 22-24; a 3pm matinee on Sunday Oct 25;  and at 7:30 on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 28-30.
