St. Augustine Historical Society Presents Revenge of the Creature!

Presented by St. Augustine Historical Society at St. Augustine Amphitheatre

The Farmers Night Market planned for April 24th is featuring a special movie on the St. Augustine Amphitheater’s Front Porch!

The St. Augustine Historical Society, in partnership with the Marineland Dolphin Adventure, the St. Johns County Public Library, and the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, is screening Revenge of the Creature at the April 24th Night Market. The event will begin at 8 pm. This event is free and open to the public!

This is the second of an ongoing series featuring films that were made in and around St. Augustine. Revenge of the Creature was the second of three movies about an ancient Amazonian “Gill-man” and was filmed primarily at Marine Studios. The St. Johns River served as the mighty Amazon, and several scenes were filmed along what is present day Friendship Park in Jacksonville. The film stars John Agar, Lori Nelson, and the “Gill-man” himself, Ricou Browning, who co-wrote and co-produced the 1963 MGM film Flipper and served as the underwater sequence director on a number of features, including Island of the Lost and Caddyshack. Pay special attention to a scene about a laboratory rat, or you will miss Clint Eastwood’s very first and uncredited moment in cinema history.

Many residents and visitors don’t know that Marine Studios was first built specifically as the world’s first underwater film studio. The vision of W. Douglas Burden, Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, and Ilya Tolstoy – three gentlemen with ties to Hollywood—Marineland Studios was a big hit when they opened their doors in 1938.

When 30,000 people tried to make it through the doors to see the exotic sea creatures, the founders realized that there might be more of a demand for a public aquarium dedicated to education and research than a film studio. Marine Studios became Marineland.

By introducing people to animals in person and on the big screen, Marineland helped to guide the love affair that people have with the oceans and its wildlife. This year marks their 80th anniversary!

Admission to Revenge of the Creature is free and open to the public.
