St. Johns County boasts a wealth of locations including the nation’s oldest historic district and coastal and rural settings. Being the oldest permanent European city in the U.S., St. Augustine and St. Johns County have numerous period locations that easily double as 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th & 21st century U.S. or European cities, and its marshes and swamps can double for many other tropical locales.

St. Augustine/ St. Johns County’s solid infrastructure, supplemented with regional resources makes filming here economical and fun!

St. Augustine/St. Johns County is a film-friendly community with cooperative local governments and agencies. Most permits are free or under $50 and are issued or coordinated through the Film Office.

SAFO’s historical film legacy goes back to the very early days of film. Highlights might include ‘Distant Drums’ with Gary Cooper (1951), ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ (1954) to more contemporary films such as ‘Lonely Hearts’  and ‘The Celestine Prophecy.’
