Celebrating the 500th birthday of Pedro Menendez de Aviles, founder of Saint Augustine, The Historic Florida Militia hosts a weeklong celebration with reenactments, a documentary film, and a lively and colorful Paseo parade featuring large papier-mâché heads and historically clad participants. On February 9th, watch and participate in demonstrations and instruction from the Spanish colonial period of the 16th century including weapons demonstrations, artillery, armor, clothing, crafts, culinary arts, and religious practices from St. Augustine’s early history. St. Augustine Celtic Music and Heritage Festival

March 8-10

Take in the sights, sounds and tastes of centuries of European history. Celtic clans from around the world show their ancestral pride, while Highland games athletes demonstrate their mind-boggling strength. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade marches through the streets of the Oldest City’s Historic District, and vendors offer up Celtic cuisine and hand-made crafts. Friday, a special whiskey tasting teaches the history and facts of many varieties of whiskey. Live music and dance performed throughout the festival. Plein Air Paint Out

April 23-May 3

A 10-day citywide St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out, presented by the St. Augustine Art Association. The event is open to local, regional and national artists. “En plein air” is a French term for painting in the open air. The outdoor practice of creating art from observation was developed in the mid-19th century and flourishes today. The Plein Air Task Force, the St Augustine Art Association and the St Johns Cultural Council have published a website, www.stjohnspleinair.com, that provides information for artists on appropriate locations and any restrictions that impact plein air painting in St. Johns County.
