There are four craft breweries in the oldest city, and soon to be five, with the newest addition at Jack’s BBQ at St. Augustine Beach — set to open in December or January.

When Spanish Conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded St. Augustine in September 1565, he brought with him masons, tailors, blacksmiths, millers, silversmiths, bookmakers, gardeners, bakers, laborers, and of course, a master brewer.

Since that time, master brewers have been creating delicious craft beer from St. Augustine’s sulfur water and adding local ingredients such as oranges and other citrus, strawberries and other berries, and even muscadine grapes to enhance the flavor. Honey, herbs, and florals also are added to the brews to create unique offerings.
