Native Floridian and Musician
Christian Powers is a local musician who recently performed in the Sing Out Loud Festival. His love for surfing and the ocean has been inspirational to his work. We recently sat down with Christian to learn more about this humble singer/songwriter.
“Ever since I was young I’ve been always involved in music. My mom’s side of the family was super into musical theater and acting. Once I got into high school I broke into the rock-n-roll side of things. I was playing drums in a pretty successful band around town at the age of 15. Born and raised on Jack Johnson, Sublime, Donavon Frankenreiter, that was always the route that I wanted to take with music. It was natural to me because I was always on the water – always surfing. My music has always been involved, somehow, with the ocean. It’s everything that I’m working on right now.
If I’m playing my own music and people are appreciating it, then I have accomplished what I want to accomplish. Just having it impact people the way that music impacts me. You have to make time for yourself. Nobody’s going to make time for you. That was something I learned at a young age. And it goes by so fast, you’ve got to take what you can when it’s there and appreciate everything. So that’s my philosophy and that’s a lot of what I write about. I want people to feel that way when I’m out there playing. I’m definitely going towards that and developing my writing, so I’m really excited.
Over the past couple years, the music scene in St. Augustine has seriously exploded. I’ve gone from playing covers in bars for a couple years to doing what I’m going to be doing now, playing original music on a stage. Sing Out Loud is going to be huge. Some of these bands they brought in totally blew my mind. You know, Indigo Girls and Booker T Jones and Reverend Peyton. For people to be able to come out and see this kind of music on a stage where you usually would have to pay to get that kind of experience is awesome. It’s amazing that it’s going to happen here.”
