READING BETWEEN THE LINES: A STUDY IN THE TASK OF BIBLICAL INTERPRETATION
Presented by Rev. Remington Slone

CEC Fine Arts Center
Since the time before the Bible was even written, the words of its stories were being interpreted to reveal their meaning to people of faith, often resulting in the imaginative task of filling in the details of some of our most famous Biblical stories. This class will review the history of interpretation, its purpose, and its invitation for every community to wonder anew how God and humanity might be revealed in the ancient stories of our faith.

Wednesday, October 4  7pm
BEING GOD: AN ACTOR’S INTERPRETATION

ARTISTIC INTERPRETATIONS OF GENESIS FROM THE FALL TO THE FLOOD
Presented by P. Scott Brown MA, MPhil, PhD – Associate Professor of Art History, UNF

CEC Fine Arts Center
Medieval and Renaissance artists and theologians used images in part to explore the meaning of the often perplexing and at times disturbing details of Scripture: the Temptation, the Fall, the murder of Abel, the mysterious descendants of Adam and Eve who appear and just as suddenly disappear from the narrative of Genesis.  Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, and painted altarpieces served not merely to depict the stories of Scripture but to interpret and to explain them in both human and theological terms.  This presentation will survey the wide range of interpretations of Genesis reflected in medieval and Renaissance religious art, offering historical perspective on the ways in which we continue to seek and find meaning in Holy Scripture.

Wednesday, October 18 7pm
SACRED STORIES: THE FALLING APART
A Co-Presentation by the Formation and Arts Departments

Room 208
Led by Catherine Montgomery and Casey Slone
Borrowing from methods using sensory storytelling, Sacred Stories will explore the fall of man and the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. We’ll begin with Adam-Eve and how they “fell apart” from God, from each other, from God’s creation, and from the image of God in their deep selves, and how these relationships were restored. The session will include personal wondering, discussion on themes presented in the story, and creative reflection. Refreshments will be provided. Please rsvp for this session.

* Event durations (if noted) are approximate. Please check with the presenting organization or venue to confirm start times and duration.
