Are you nostalgic for (or even just curious about) what St. Augustine was like during the latter half of the twentieth century? The Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine is pleased to welcome local Living Legend Sandra Parks to talk about her experiences growing up on St. George Street.
A native of St. Augustine, Sandra and her sister Donna grew up at 18 St. George Street, next to the family-owned Parks Hotel. Educated in St. Johns County public schools (graduating from Ketterlinus High School in 1958), Sandra holds degrees from the University of South Florida and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. An educator, author, small business owner, and former St. Augustine City Commissioner, she was instrumental in the development of the current library system.
This program is free and open to the public and will take place at The Waterworks, 184 San Marco Ave., which shares a parking lot with the Main Library. Seating begins at 12:00 pm, and the presentation starts promptly at 1:00 pm. No reservations are required. For more information, please call the Main Library at 904-827-6940.
Sandra Parks served on the St. Augustine Commission from 1983 to 1987, where she worked on various projects such as the location of the Main Library at Davenport Park and the Tourism Development Tax. As an educator and author of educational curriculum designed to improve students’ thinking skills, she served as a curriculum consultant to school districts on thinking instruction and gifted/talented education in 40 states, the Virgin Islands, and two Canadian provinces and she is the founding co-director for National Center for Teacher Thinking. Sandra has served on many local boards and organizations including Florida Heritage Book Festival, Fort Mose Historical Society, and Florida Historical Society. She is a founding director for the Stetson Kennedy Foundation, an organization established in memory of her late husband and civil rights activist, Stetson Kennedy. Sandra was recently bestowed with the Living Legends Award from the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center.
