On Tuesday, November 6th, the monthly meetings of the St. Augustine Archaeological Association will be held. A talk will be given by Julie Duggins titled Florida’s Dugout Canoes: Why Does Gainesville Have More Than St. Augustine?
Florida is home to the densest concentration of archaeological canoes in the world. Surprisingly, ancient dugouts are not spread out evenly across the state but are concentrated in north central Florida. Archaeologists have long assumed the patterns in distribution are due to organic preservation and the large number of lakes in the region. But what if the answer, instead, is more about human behavior and ancient transportation routes?
