When a Bronx Borough President is forced by the mortgage crisis into a confrontation with a local minister, the question they confront is one that faces us all: What is the relationship between spiritual experience and social action? This third installment of John Patrick Shanley’s riveting trilogy pushes the boundaries of moral responsibility in service to those around us.
Should we give willingly of ourselves, or does our generosity only breed reliance and codependency? This is the question posed as Donaldo Calderon goes to confront a local preacher, Chester Kimmich, regarding the establishment and misuse of a local storefront church. This misuse has led to a personal financial crisis that has put Donaldo’s family friend, Jessie Cortez, in ruin despite her efforts to bolster her community and help those around her.
Storefront Church follows the narrative set by Shanley’s previous Pulitzer prize-winning plays Doubt and Defiance.
