The St. Augustine Historical Society will present a dramatic reading from Ann Browning Masters’ Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle-Whip Crackers: Poetry of St. Augustine. Recently published by the Florida Historical Society Press, this work describes common life in St. Augustine from after the Civil War through the Civil Rights Movement. The program will tell five stories of the lives of St. Augustine’s black and white residents before and after the watershed visit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the summer of 1964. The now almost-forgotten transition of the Menorcan population from not-quite-white to white will also be revisited.
Dr. Masters’ poetry has been published in anthologies and journals, read at history and literary conferences, recognized at the Florida Folk Festival, and recorded for the Florida State Historical Archives. In 2015 she was knighted by the St. Augustine Easter Festival for her dedication in promoting St. Augustine’s Spanish heritage. A St. Augustine native, Dr. Masters is a 12th generation Floridian.
The program is free and open to the public. This reading describes the lives of some of St. Augustine’s black and white residents during and after segregation. The use of dialect, racial slurs common to the time, and references to violence may be offensive to some. Individual discretion is advised when deciding to attend this presentation.
