The Crisp-Ellert Art Museum and Flagler College are delighted to announce Sky Hopinka as our CEAM Artist in Residence for Spring 2018. During his visit, Hopinka will work closely with Flagler College students and faculty through class visits and critiques, and will give a workshop for Flagler students. We will screen a selection of Hopinka’s short films, including “Dislocation Blues” (2017), “Anti-Objects” (2016), “I’ll Remember you as you Were, not What You’ll Become,” (2016) and “Visions of an Island,” (2016) on Monday February 12, 2018 at 6 pm in the Kenan Academic Building, room 300. The screening, followed by a short Q & A, will be free and open to the public.
As a filmmaker who is a Ho-Chunk Nation national and descendent of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, Hopinka has developed his work to center around personal positions of homeland and landscape, designs of language and facets of culture contained within, and the play between the accessibility of the known and the unknowable” He explores the use of language and how it is both an access to knowledge as well as a barrier leading to frustration, and his short films, each between five and twenty minutes, display his keen eye and controlled aesthetic.
Hopinka’s work has been included in various festivals and exhibitions including ImagineNATIVE Media + Arts Festival, The Whitney Biennial, Images Festival, Projections, Ann Arbor Film Festival, American Indian Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Antimatter Film Festival, Wavelengths, LA Film Festival, the Wisconsin Triennial, and the Berwick Media and Arts Festival. He was awarded jury prizes at the Milwaukee Underground Film Festival, the More with Less Award at the 2016 Images Festival, the Tom Berman Award for Most Promising Filmmaker at the 54th Ann Arbor Film Festival, and 3rd Prize at the 2015 Media City Film Festival. He received his BA from Portland State University in Liberal Arts and his MFA in Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Hopinka current lives and works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
